Mark Millar Talks Wanted 2

Wanted, that film with curving bullets which is loosley based on Mark Millar and JG Jones’ comic, is reaching a worldwide box office of $260 million so it's time to talk Wanted 2. Read on to see how Mark Millar will be involved in the sequel and why he is not doing a comic book follow up.

“At the premiere, everybody knew that it was going to make a lot of money, and we were all buzzing,” Millar told Newsarama. “On the way out, Mark Platt, the main producer put his arms around me and JG and said, ‘Okay, so what’s the plan for Wanted 2?’ I looked at him and said, ‘There is no plan,’ and he said to me, ‘Okay, well, have something for us next week.’”

So what plans does Mark Millar have? “What I will be doing is providing them with a very small amount of stuff for a story, and that will be used as a basic story that they can build from. It will be a small outline that can possibly be picked apart and not used – but it will be something exclusively for the second film, and no one will ever really see it.”

“It will be some of the stuff that we didn’t utilize from the first book for the movie – like chapters three and four – there will be some stuff from that, so in the loosest sense it will be based on the book, but only very little,” Millar said. “The nice thing about owning it and creator-owned properties is that JG and I will still be producers on the thing, and will still obviously get paid for the rights.”

Millar also reveals that as soon as the film opened to $55 million on its first weekend Wanted 2 and 3 were greenlit with James McAvoy signing on for another two movies.

Although fans of the comic book mini won't be seeing more Wanted in that form. “I’ve got this reputation of being a total whore, and even when I’m adamant about something like this, people don’t believe me, but there is nothing else coming from Wanted,” Millar said. “That six issues was the end. I love doing new stuff anyway – I get bored so quickly.”

There you go, another case of money = sequels (probably the only case these days). I wouldn't mind more big action set pieces in the sequel but I hated McAvoy's character and the plot was garbage. Anway, do you want more Wanted?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer Coming to DVD?

Could Fox be set to debut the official trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine on DVD? This seems highly unlikely but Superhero Flix have noted that the Australian Classification Board have approved a 2 minute "Wolverine" video for an upcoming DVD release. I would say that this would be a "sneek peak" featurette to be included to try and sell an upcoming X-Men Trilogy DVD re-release of some sorts. Or it is the trailer but I'm sure it will be attached to a film before that DVDs release.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine centers its story on the epically violent and romantic past of Logan and his involvement with Weapon X program. Directed by Gavin Hood, the film stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is set for release May 1, 2009.

Plans For Red Sonja Sequel?

Ever since I saw the two posters for Red Sonja with Rose McGowan as the 'She-Devil with a Sword' I have been very excited for the film (in more ways than one). Well director Douglas Aarniokoski must be equally excited as he is already dropping hints for a Red Sonja sequel!

MTV caught up with Aarniokoski and asked him if there were any plans for a sequel or any other film based on the characters in the same universe. “I mean, if we start to talk about that, I start to give away the third act,” he said. “Yes, let’s just say yes. It’s definitely got franchise written all over it.”

He was also asked about the chance of seeing Conan or Thulsa Doom making an appearance in the films, he responded with “You know, again, I’d love to tell you but I can’t divulge that. It’s a little bit under wraps right now.”

So there you go, want to see a sequel to a film that you haven't even seen yet? Of course you do. Just look at the posters!

Max Makowski To Direct Voltron!

You know talking about a Voltron movie gets me pretty damn excited (no, not in that way but I'm sure there will be something going on in the pants once I see a trailer) and here is some big news - Voltron will be directed by Max Makowski! Who? That was my first reaction.

Latino Review got the scoop that Makowski would be helming the film. Who? Oh you're still asking that aren't you well his credits include The Pigeon Egg Strategy and One Last Dance (both premiered at Sundance) and he will also be bringing Kung Fu (based on the TV show) to the big screen. Oh and he also worked on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

I don't know what to expect and that could be a good thing. If it was someone like Michael Bay at the helm we would all know how things would go down. So is anybody familiar with Makowski's work? Do you think this is a good choice? Is there any other director you would rather see helming Voltron?

Todd Solondz's Happiness Sequel

Those who enjoyed (I guess enjoyed is the wrong word) Todd Solondz’s Happiness will be happy to learn that the writer-director's next film will be a part-sequel, part-companion piece to his 1998 dark comedy.

The project has been incubating for years, with Emma Thompson, Demi Moore and Paul Reubens rumored to be attached Variety reports.

The film revolves around a group of struggling individuals. struggling to find a place for themselves in an unpredictable and volatile world. The narrative is told through a series of intersecting love stories.; the past haunts the present and imperils the future: ghosts circle and loom, trouble and console.

The film will be fully financed and produced by New indie production and finance company Werc Werk Works. With casting currently under way, the film is scheduled to begin principal photography in October in San Juan.

Personally, I still think Todd Solondz’s Happiness is a brilliant film and has been often imitated since its release. Hopefully we can revisit these characters and see where they are now in their lives.

Did you like Happiness? Would you like to see a part-sequel, part-companion piece to the film?

Alex Proyas Isn't Directing Silver Surfer. But Why?

During this years Comic Con, Alex Proyas killed the rumors that he was going to be directing a Silver Surfer film. “Unfortunately that is just a rumor. I don’t know where that came from,” he said. But was it really just a rumor?

Alex Proyas has not said that an official offer was ever on the table but he explains why he would not do a Silver Surfer film. “Because it’s a Fox picture,” he told MTV. “And I’m determined never to work with them ever again because of my experience on ‘I,Robot.’”

"Of course, nobody really liked “Fantastic Four 2,” especially the subplot with the Surfer, Proyas argued. “It’s like the origin of Silver Surfer was in that movie, and I’m going, ‘This is such a fucking great story, why throw it away?’” Proyas wondered. “I think they messed it up.”

Proyas was also asked if there was any other comic book characters he would like to bring to the big screen. “You know, there aren’t that many left,” he sighed. “Silver Surfer would have been something I would have loved to have done. He’s one of the last cool ones left, really.”

“But yeah,” he added. “If you have any thoughts, give me a call.”

I totally agree with Alex Proyas about Silver Surfer being wasted in Fantastic Four 2 and I would have loved to see what he would have done with the character. So what do you guys think, Did Fox offer Alex Proyas Silver Surfer? Or is that just reading too much in to it?

Christina Milian in Bring it On 5

What must be a sign of the apocalypse, a fifth entry in the Bring it On franchise will be hitting the DVD shelves (I assume) very soon. Bring it On Cinco (too cool for 5 huh?) will star Christina Milian (Pulse, Be Cool) and Nikki SooHoo (Stick It). Read inside for the synopsis OMG!

Director Bille Woodruff (Honey) will be directing the film Moviehole reports, which will play out like this:

Upset when her waitress mother marries a millionaire, Lina has to leave her award-winning cheerleading squad in East L.A. and move to her new stepdad's Malibu mansion. A fish out of water in her affluent new surroundings, Lina takes on the seemingly impossible task of transforming her new school's inept, second-string cheerleading squad, the Sea Lions, into a championship caliber team. Lina also finds a new romance with Evan Whitbourne, a wealthy white Malibu boy, but Evan's bitchy sister Avery, a star cheerleader who views Lina as a dangerous upstart, seems determined to break up Lina and her brother and send Lina packing. But despite a series of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Lina and her scrappy fellow cheerleaders may yet prevail at the upcoming Spirit Championships. And in the process, Lina may learn that she has more in common with her new classmates -- and her new stepsister, Sky -- than she had ever anticipated.

Will Christopher Nolan Do Batman 3?

Everyday it seems that there is a new rumor regarding a third Batman film (Cher as Catwoman? C'mon) and as the film nears $500 million domestically I think it is safe to say that there will be a third film but will Christopher Nolan be back?

In a recent article from THR which says that Warners and Legendary are both interested in doing a third in the series, but all involved say it will be up to Christopher Nolan to come to them with a story and a plan.

"There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it," Roven says. "But it's really Chris' call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn't think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on."

If Nolan turns down the idea of a third Batman film I believe Warner Bros. will go ahead with a new director regardless. Also the way Nolan ended The Dark Knight screams third film so it's hard to believe that there was not a loose plan for a third. What do you guys think?

Edgar Wright Updates Scott Pilgrim and Ant-Man

Read inside as the man behind Spaced, Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz gives an update on the two comic book movies he is involved in - Scott Pilgrim and Ant-Man.

Edgar Wright recently spoke with Wizard Universe about where Scott Pilgrim was at:

"We’re hopefully going into production later this year. We've been doing a lot of work on it in a conception level and getting into casting and crew and stuff. In the number of times I've been to Toronto, one of the most amazing things about Bryan's artwork is that it all refers to real locations. All of the locations in the book he took, maybe even sometimes there's a chain restaurant, like, a Pizza Pizza in Toronto that's a specific branch that he's taken a photo of. Just last month I took some sort of the crew around, like, the Scott Pilgrim locations and it's an amazing thing to take one of the books and say, "Hey, there it is!" You know, and especially where it's essentially very non-descript locations that Bryan has taken photographic reference for and there and lo and behold is the place!"

"The script that we've written essentially covers all six. If it was at the level of Harry Potter we might be able to talk about doing six films but in this case our film is very much an adaptation of the entire six. It's very much in the spirit of Bryan's books and certainly in terms of the first and second books there are whole sections that are straight from the books but then it slightly takes on its own momentum and kind of pace. Especially as a counter point to how uninvolved we were in the American remake of "Spaced," I've been very keen to involve Bryan in every stage of this so that he feels happy and comfortable with what we've written, and as Bryan, I'm sure, will tell you, there are a couple of bits in the fourth and soon to be fifth book which are lines from our screenplay. I feel quite proud that there's a couple of bits in Scott Pilgrim volume 4 where I'm thinking, "That's my line!""

And what about that Ant-Man film?

"I wrote the first draft of the script which, to be honest, kind of took two years to deliver because I did "Hot Fuzz" in the middle of it. But I did my first draft of it just before the strike last year and I think it's one of my favorite things I've ever written. It was a real blast to write. I know that [Marvel's] very pleased with what we've done and, really, really, the appeal to that for me is the fact that like, Ant Man is considered slightly D-list. The whole raison d'etre of the piece for me and my thing has always been to take something that would seem to be uncool and make it really cool and that's certainly the case with British cops in "Hot Fuzz." To take the most seemingly kind of underwhelming concept and make something really cool out of it—I always liked that premise. As a little kid I had a reprint of "The Man in the Ant Hill," the very first Ant Man kind of story and it's something that always struck me. Most shrinking films are about in somebody in jeopardy and this is something where the shrinker has the power. Rather than it being something that's a terrible thing to happen, it's actually making your character into the most bad ass sort of action hero/spy possible."

Scott Pilgrim is set to star (the very funny) Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim and (the very hot) Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona. And if you haven't read Scott Pilgrim I highly recommend it.

Shatner Still Not In Star Trek

Why wouldn't JJ Abrams have William Shatner in his upcoming Star Trek reboot? Nimoy's back, why not The Shat? He has to be in it right? Well both Shatner and Abrams are still claiming that the man that brought Captain James T. Kirk to life has nothing to do with the project.

In the latest issue of Star Trek Magazine, Shatner says he had some meetings with JJ Abrams, but he still isn’t certain "what those meetings were about." But he did say this (Quote thanks to Trekmovie)

"I have no connection with the film whatsoever. It’s the strangest thing. Even my dear friend Leonard [Nimoy] won’t tell me what it’s about"

Also IGN reported that in a recent press event for Fringe in New York, JJ Abrams addressed 'The Shatner' question:

"No, the only cast member from the original films is Nimoy."

I honeslty believe that Shatner will appear in the film and that they are both keeping the fact a secret, or maybe I'm just hoping this will be the case.

Do you guys think The Shat will be back in JJ Abrams' reboot?

The Watchmen Lawsuit Explained

Want to know what this Watchmen lawsuit is really about? The New York Times has a great article on 20th Century Fox’s lawsuit with Warner Bros over the rights to Watchmen. Check out part of it inside.

The Fox-Warner tiff turns on matters potentially more nettlesome to the industry at large. Central to Fox’s complaint is the mysterious matter of what is called turnaround.

On its face, turnaround is a contractual mechanism that allows a studio to release its interest in a dormant film project, while recovering costs, plus interest, from any rival that eventually adopts the project. But turnaround is a stacked deck.

The turnaround clauses in a typical contract are also insurance for studio executives who do not want to be humiliated by a competitor who makes a hit out of their castoffs.
That trick turns on a term of art: “changed elements.” A producer of a movie acquired in turnaround who comes up with a new director, or star, or story line, or even a reduction in budget, must give the original studio another shot at making the movie because of changed elements, even if a new backer has entered the picture.

Thus, “Michael Clayton” was put in turnaround by Castle Rock Entertainment (which, like Warner, belongs to Time Warner). When George Clooney became attached to star in it, however, Castle Rock stood on its right to be involved as a producer of what turned out to be an Oscar-nominated film.

Babylon A.D. Director Says The Movie Is Stupid!

I'm thinking about changing the name of this blog to The Vin Diesel Fix. Anyway before you rush out to the cinema to see his latest film Babylon A.D. there is something the films director has to say "parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24." Do you want go hire some DVDs instead? I've got some coupons. Read on to see what else director Mathieu Kassovitz has to say.

"I'm very unhappy with the film," director Mathieu Kassovitz told AMC. "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience."

"It's pure violence and stupidity," he admits. "The movie is supposed to teach us that the education of our children will mean the future of our planet. All the action scenes had a goal: They were supposed to be driven by either a metaphysical point of view or experience for the characters... instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24."

Also Vin Diesel has not seen a cut of the film in six months. "Am I even in the movie any more, or am I on the cutting room floor?" the actor joked

But Kassovitz doesn't hate the film entirely "I like the energy of it and I got some scenes I'm happy with," he says. "But I know what I had -- I had something much better in my hands but I just wasn't allowed to work."

"I don't see how people who went through all these amazing blockbusters like The Dark Knight and Iron Man this summer will take it."

"I should have chosen a studio that has guts," he says. "Fox was just trying to get a PG-13 movie. I'm ready to go to war against them, but I can't because they don't give a shit."

This is great promotion for me because I'm going to see it just to see how bad it is!

Vin Diesel Talks Two More Riddick Sequels

Richard B. Riddick will be back but not once but twice! Yes Vin Diesel has revealed that David Twowy is writing the scripts for two sequels at the moment and that they may be shot back to back. Read on for what else Vin Diesel had to say about the Riddick sequels.

“David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind,” Vin Diesel told MTV “‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ was presented as a three part trilogy that would answer ‘Pitch Black’ in the same way that ‘Lord of the Rings’ answered ‘The Hobbit.’”

“Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I’m always working on it,” Diesel asserted. “It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it.”

So what will be next for the Furyan warrior?

“Sooner or later we all end up in the Underverse,” he said then adding in a Riddick-like voice, “Sooner or later.”

Regardless of what anybody says I thought The Chronicles of Riddick was amazing and loved every minute of it so I can't wait to see a sequel or two.

So who does or doesn't want to see Riddick return?

No Press Screenings for Bangkok Dangerous

The clip we all saw of Bangkok Dangerous looked pretty terrible right? Well it seems that Lionsgate are going to spare the press of sitting through the rest of the film. And all I wanted this year was a good Nicolas Cage film.

There will be no press screenings for Bangkok Dangerous which stars Nicolas Cage and is directed by The Pang Brothers Cinema Blend reports. What does this mean? Well more than likely it means that it is a piece of shit and Lionsgate don't want the critics to let us know that before we go see it. Oh hell, a critic could tell me and I would still go see it - It's Nicolas Cage! Right? Hey have you guys seen The Rock....

Kevin Smith Reviews JJ Abrams' Star Trek!!! (Sort Of)

It's time to be jealous of Kevin Smith all over again and not just because he is an insanely awesome filmmaker. We all know he has seen Watchmen which he loved but by the sounds of it he has also seen a little film by JJ Abrams called Star Trek (although he couldn't flat out say that he had)! Read on!

TrekMovie, who are covering all things new in Trek, reported the following today:

Kevin Smith was a guest on KROQ’s Kevin and Bean show this morning and the subject of the new Star Trek movie came up with Smith giving a review of a movie in a roundabout way.

Although it was never said explicitly, it appears Kevin Smith was given an early viewing of Star Trek, but he was very much trying to deny that he had, or at least not come out and say anything that would break the ‘cone of silence’ around JJ Abrams ultra-secret project. Early in the show when Kevin joined one of the hosts said "somebody’s seen the new Star Trek movie, I understand?" At which point Smith sardonically dismissed the question. Then much later in the show, after recounting his thoughts on his early screening of the Watchmen movie, Smith was asked if he has seen anything else. Here is the exchange:

Host: So thumbs up on The Watchmen, what else you got?

Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.

Host: Was it good?

Smith: It was phenomenal.

Host: Any stars, any break out stars, and do they trek?

Smith: The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn’t need to be worried–about this film I cannot talk about…It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job–the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy.

Host: How do you out Shatner, Shatner?

Smith: I don’t what you are talking about.

Host: I was just saying that as an expression.

Smith: Yes, absolutely, in a world of expressions, I would agree with that…I am so not good with this game, you are going to bury me man.

Host: We had you on before The Dark Knight and I remember asking you if you could direct a movie like Dark Knight and you said ‘hell no’ it was so far out of your sphere…but I bring that up to preface this. Let’s say a franchise like Star Trek, not that you have seen the movie or we are talking about the movie, but we are talking about it for example. That is something that is so dangerous to attempt. Is that the kind of project you would like to do? Would you like to be the guy who gets to do a movie like that?

Smith: I would not like to be the guy. In the case of something like Star Trek, it would take a really insanely talented filmmaker–storyteller. Like in the case of Star Trek, JJ Abrams. So leave it to the people who are best equipped for it. I am just the guy who should be watching those movies.

There you go, Kevin Smith says Star Trek was phenomenal! So what do you guys think of this (sort of) review?
