When I first heard that Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant was being remade, it was a triple WTF moment - Hey they're remaking Bad Lieutenant - WTF? Nicolas Cage is going to star - double WTF? with cheese. And Werner Herzog is directing it - Triple WTF??? Anyway read on as Nicolas Cage gives the lowdown on Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans, which sounds like a watered down version of the original.First of all Nicolas Cage, like Werner Herzog, is claiming that this is not a remake. “It’s a new version of ‘Bad Lieutenant’ in a whole new place. [Herzog] connects it to Bond - like there was more than one Bond,” Cage told MTV. “[I play] a whole new character. He’s nothing like Harvey [Keitel’s] character.”
“[The original] movie was a result of Judeo-Christian programming,” Cage said of where the two will most diverge. “This one is much more existential.”
And will Cage nude up Keitel style? “That remains to be seen,” Cage said, laughing heartily, refusing to divulge whether or not he would appear nude on-screen.
I guess the obvious question is that if this is not a remake and Cage's character is totally different from the original then why the fuck would you call it Bad Lieutenant? And why would Herzog even touch this?
